Muay Thai is a form of full contact kickboxing. The kicking techniques of Muay Thai are a whole body experience, exemplifying strength and control. The idea is not to connect, but to go through an attacker with the full force of the kick. Muay Thai kicks can sweep a partner off his feet, so use a gymnasium mat or other soft floor covering while practicing. Instructions for a low round kick and a low right kick are below.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Low Round Kick

  1. Step 1

Stand at least 3 feet away from your partner or punching bag with the right foot forward and arms raised in a defense position. This means that the right leg is approximately 6 inches in front of the body, both knees are slightly bent and arms are bent at the elbows and protecting the chest area.

  2. Step 2

Take a jumping step forward with the right leg as you sweep the left leg around horizontally towards the lower side of the punching bag or your partner. The left leg performs a hooking movement as it connects with the target. Perform this step almost simultaneously with Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Connect with your partner or punching bag along the left shin of the right leg after bringing the foot round to the side in a sweeping motion. This is a low round kick. Return to the position at the beginning of Step 1 upon completion.

  4. Low Muay Thai Kick

  5. Step 1

Begin in a position similar to Step 1 except with the left foot out in front of the body. Padding on the shins for you and your partner is best, given the intensity of the low Muay Thai kick.

  6. Step 2

Place your body weight on the front left knee as you spring off the right toe and initiate a kick. Keep the arms in front of the chest in a defensive position.

  7. Step 3

Bend the left leg as you sweep the right shin across your partner's right shin. The point of contact should begin at your right ankle and go all the way up to the right knee. During an actual attack, the body's whole weight is focused on the right shin's connection with the attacker's leg.

  8. Step 4

Practice each move as many times as it takes to execute the kicks flawlessly before combining them with upper body punches or blocks.
