It is never an easy situation when someone dies. It is a stressful and sad time. When someone dies, it is always hard to find the right thing to say. However, it is always proper and polite to pay your respects when someone dies.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the funeral home. No matter how hard it may be, it is always good to visit the wake or funeral of the deceased. It is a nice way to say goodbye and remember this person. It is also a good way to be around others who loved the deceased to comfort and support each other. Only stay a short time. Do not arrive too early or leave too late.

  2. Step 2

Wear something nice. Black is the most appropriate color to wear to a funeral, but it is not the only color. One can also wear blue, brown, red or purple. Do not wear bright, cheery colors. It is best to wear darker or earth tone colors.

  3. Step 3

Listen to what others are saying and say what they are saying to others. "I'm sorry" is appropriate or "My thoughts and prayers are with you" is also a nice thing to say. Avoid saying phrases such as "too bad," "your loss" or "you'll feel better in a few days." These phrases are rude and disrespectful.

  4. Step 4

Hug people. After you hug, tell of a good memory that you have with the person who died, but do not talk too much.

  5. Step 5

Be helpful. Ask if there is anything you can do to help. Make a donation in the deceased name, buy a flower arrangement, help make the funeral dinner or offer to be a pallbearer.

  6. Step 6

Crym but do not do it in a loud, obnoxious or immature manner. The pain you feel for the loss is real, but while others are around, try to control it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let others know you are there for them. Talk to the guest and ask them how they knew the decreased person. Share your memories with others.
