If your dog eats dirt, it can be a sign that something is wrong with him either physically or mentally. Although it may not seem like a big problem, it can become one. Dirt may contain chemicals such as fertilizer or insecticide as well as sharp objects. This can severely harm your dog. Follow these steps to get your dog to stop eating dirt.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Investigate the ingredients in your dog food. Dogs often eat dirt if they have a poor diet. A high quality dog food consists of natural ingredients and minimal additives and are available at specialty pet stores or veterinarian offices.

  2. Step 2

Entertain your dog with a game of catch, weight pulling, fly ball or any other activities that your dog may enjoy. Dogs often eat dirt out of boredom if you tie them up or cage them in a dog run. Enroll your dog in obedience or agility courses for added mental and physical challenges.

  3. Step 3

Provide your dog with plenty of chew toys. Dogs are especially fond of raw hides and pig's ears for their chewing satisfaction. Dogs may eat dirt to satisfy an oral fixation that you can cure with chew toys.

  4. Step 4

Train your dog to be in a crate and keep her indoors when you're away. This will stop your dog from eating dirt and will make her feel more secure. It's safer to crate your dog indoors so she doesn't escape from the yard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit your veterinarian if none of these steps stop your dog from eating dirt. This could be a sign that your dog has a medical disorder.
