Clay is an easy material to manipulate. You can make it into any shape you want with a little bit of patience and little or no tools, using only your hands.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a can of clay in a color of your choice. Roses are generally red, pink, yellow or white, but the color is up to your imagination. There is also the option of using regular clay then painting it after you sculpt the clay rose.

  2. Step 2

Use a cylinder as the bottom piece of the rose because this will add support. You can use a long cylinder to include it as part of the stem.

  3. Step 3

Make a flat strip from the clay by rolling a thin section of it. The strip should taper off at the end with the thick side measuring roughly 1/4-inch in thickness. You can make the tapered end as thin as you desire.

  4. Step 4

Roll the strip into the shape of a rose petal. Round the tip of the rose and scrunch it up gently. Make ruffles in it by pressing softly with a butter knife then curl the petals.

  5. Step 5

Create more strips. Make some big and thick and the others small and thin. Scratch and slip the pieces into each other. Fold the strips into one another working from largest to smallest.

  6. Step 6

Pinch the bottom of the rose and add a stem. You can curve the stem if you desire and add some leaves.

  7. Step 7

Bake the clay rose in a 400-degree oven for about 1/2 hour or until the clay is hard. Paint with a gloss before baking to add shine if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you will handle the finished clay rose product a lot make sure to purchase a stronger clay. It's more expensive, but it's also much more durable than cheaper clay.
