How to Go to School or Work Sick

Sometimes even when you are sick you have to go to school or work. This is not the best practice because you take the chance of getting others sick. However, if you are working on an important deadline for work or you have a big test in school you must go to work or school sick. They call this presenteeism, which is the opposite of absenteeism.

Instructions

    • 1

Get up--this may be the hardest part especially if moving makes your head explode or makes you want to vomit.

    • 2

Take a shower--most of the time, if you aren't very sick, taking a shower will make you feel better. You don't want to take a bath, but a shower is refreshing. If you still feel bad, reassess the situation--do you really need to go to work or school.

    • 3

Eat something--sometimes dry toast and a cup of tea will calm your stomach enough to get you through at least part of the day. If you have your test in the afternoon, you may want to go to school then, rather than the whole day. Likewise, if you can complete your assignment in half a day you may want to go in the morning and leave later.

    • 4

Be sure to take any medication that will help your symptoms and won't make you drowsy. It's no use going to work or school if you are just going to be sleepy, obviously you won't be doing your best work if you are sick, but at least keep a clear head. Take the medication with you to work so if it starts to wear off, you can take more.

    • 5

Try not to interact with your co-workers or with the other students. Try to stay at your desk, do your work, and ignore the people around you. You can tell them you are contagious and only come near at their own risk. You may want to ask your teacher to move you somewhere where you are close to the door if you have to get to the restroom all of a sudden or a place where you won't be coughing on everyone. Make sure your teachers or boss know that you are sick and you are only there to take the test or do the assignment you need to complete. It's possible your boss will let you take an assignment home to do, but your teacher has to have you in the classroom to take the test.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try not to go to school or work sick too often. Infecting others isn't a nice thing to do.

  • Be sure to let your teacher know you have medication with you. You don't want to get into trouble for having drugs.
