How to Dress for a White House Party

Congratulations! You have an invitation to the White House. Whether you sit on the left, the right or squarely in the middle of the political arena, it's always exciting to party at the President's house. It may be a once-in-a-lifetime event, so make the most of it when you ponder the question of what to wear.

1. Determine the purpose of the event. A glamorous black-tie holiday affair calls for a different look than an afternoon reception for the Daughters of the American Revolution. You'll need to plan your outfit accordingly.

2. Contact the First Lady's social secretary when you RSVP. She can give you the scoop on what others will be wearing.

3. Dress somewhat conservatively. This isn't the place to show off your voluptuous figure in a shockingly revealing gown. You also don't want to make a political statement with your get-up, no matter how much you may disagree with the current head of state. You're going to a party, not a political debate. Show respect for the country's highest office.

4. Choose black, if you want, since it always looks elegant. It's also easy to dress up if your fashion budget is tight. But don't hesitate to wear bright colors. A Christmas gala? Dazzle them with red.

5. Refrain from draping yourself in jewelery. Just because it's the most elegant place you've ever been doesn't mean you have to prove your worth with the family jewels. Pearls always look elegant. Try a smashing pair of chandelier earrings with a ball gown.

6. Bring a simple and small clutch bag that's easy to carry. You don't want to be burdened with things to hold when you get the opportunity to shake the President's hand. Expect the bag to be searched before you enter the White House.
