How to Buy Forklift Fork Extenders

Forklift fork extenders make it easier to pick up larger, though not necessarily heavier, loads. Before you buy fork extenders, know the size and weight of the forklift and the dimensions, including weight, of the materials you want to lift. Scrupulously follow all safety regulations. Though some forklifts are small, they are nevertheless heavy machinery, and only experienced drivers should operate them.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish the length you need. The longer the forks, the smaller the weight capacity the forklift can bear. Fork extenders should not exceed the length of the original forks by more than half.

    • 2

Know the thickness of your forks. Standard forks are two inches thick.

    • 3

Buy extenders with high-quality safety latches. Without latches, the extenders can slip off the forks, which can cause a serious accident. Welded on safety loops are more secure than pull pins.

    • 4

Choose extenders that are easy to install. Then make sure all forklift operators know how to attach the fork extenders properly.

    • 5

Purchase extenders with a brightly colored safety finish to increase visibility and reduce the risk of collisions and other accidents.

    • 6

Determine your forklift's terrain rating. If you plan to drive your forklift on rough terrain, buy shorter extenders than your forklift allows. Motion caused by rough terrain can have the same effects as extra weight.

    • 7

Haul your load as low as possible, no matter what the length of your forks. This greatly reduces the severity of mishaps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear gloves when you attach forklift fork extenders so you won't catch your fingers between the forks and the extenders.
