Tomato juice stains can be one of the toughest stains to fight once the juice gets on your carpet. White or light-colored carpets may never be the same. Use these tips to act fast and conquer the stain before an unsightly orange spot remains on your carpet for good.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Grab a paper towel or clean cloth and cover the stain with it. Allow excess tomato juice to absorb into the cloth. Remove the paper towel or cloth when all the excess tomato juice has been absorbed.

  2. Step 2

Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup of lukewarm water and about ¼ tsp. of liquid detergent. Shake the bottle so that the water and detergent mix. Moisten a clean sponge with lukewarm water.

  3. Step 3

Spray the solution onto the tomato juice stain until it is adequately wet. Sponge as much as the stain away as you can. Use light, quick strokes and start from the stain's furthermost point and work inward. Using this sponging method will help contain the stain.

  4. Step 4

Find a common laundry stain-fighting agent and apply it to the stain. After applying the agent, let it soak into the carpet for approximately 5 minutes before wetting the stain again with your water and detergent solution and sponging it.

  5. Step 5

Use a clean side of the sponge to sponge the carpet again until all the detergent and stain-fighting agent have been removed from the carpet. Get the area as dry as possible by blotting it with some paper towels.

  6. Step 6

Cover the newly-cleaned carpet stain with two of three paper towels. Place a trash can or another heavy object over the covered stain. Allow the paper towels to absorb excess moisture overnight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try applying hydrogen peroxide or fresh lemon juice to the still-fresh tomato juice stain if your carpet is white or light in color. Hydrogen peroxide and fresh lemon juice can help return your carpet to its original light color.
  • Consider using your finger tips to massage the solution into the stain if it seems like it's really tough.
  • Avoid over-wetting the carpet with your spray solution.
  • Avoid rubbing the stain too hard. Rough cleaning may damage your carpet.
