With MSN Messenger you enter any variety of display names, or "nicknames," including smileys. But if you don't want a nickname to appear, and you have MSN Messenger version 6.0 or higher, you can also set your name to appear blank using the correct combination of keystrokes. Read on to find out how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • MSN Messenger 6.0 or higher
  • Computer keyboard with numeric key pad
  1. Step 1

    Log in to MSN Messenger.

  2. Step 2

Open the MSN Messenger "Options" window and choose the option to change your display name.

  3. Step 3

Delete your current MSN Display Name.

  4. Step 4

Hold down the "Alt" key on your keyboard and use the keypad on the far right side of your keyboard to type in the numbers 0160.

  5. Step 5

Click "OK" to save this display name, which should now appear blank.

Tips & Warnings
  • A common mistake is to accidentally hold down "Ctrl" or "Shift." Make sure you are actually holding down the "Alt" key.
  • For Windows Live Messenger, if Alt + 0160 doesn't work, try holding down the "Alt" key and type in 789456789456.
  • Do not take advantage of the blank display name in order to use profanity and spread inappropriate materials. It is still possible for other users to find your email address despite your blank display name.
  • If you are using a laptop that does not have a numeric keypad, you may need to attach an external keypad or log in to MSN Messenger using a different computer with available numeric keypad. The directions above will not work with the linear numbers.
