Changing the larger, more cumbersome Midi format audio file into a WAV is often the first step in audio mixing. The Midi file format was designed to be a generic audio format. However, you'll need to convert a Midi file into a WAV file to use the audio files for creating a music CD or MP3.

Step1

Choose conversion software. There are numerous types of audio conversion software available. The capabilities of the software will first be determined by the cost. Freeware conversion software is available for basic conversion.

Convert the midi file directly from your soundcard during playback. This process takes place in real time and is dependent upon the quality of the soundcard's synthesizer.

Step3

Change the midi file into a WAV file using the file directly without playback. The software converts the digital signature of the Midi file into a WAV and drops the unnecessary information such as digital time stamping.

Step4

Alter the properties of the Midi files before converting them. It is easier to alter the deeper electronic structure (binary segments) of the audio file when it is still a Midi file.

Step5

Record the WAV file onto the PC. Use good audio mixing software, such as Sound Forge, to manipulate the qualities of the audio file.
