The salamander in flames is a symbol of survival and inconquerability. It was popular on several coats of arms in the 1500s and is still used today on the Honorary Citizens of Torun (Poland) medal. Drawing this symbol of eternal life is easy. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons

    Draw the Salamander

  1. Step 1

Outline the salamander's head lightly in pencil. A salamander has a head shaped like a fat diamond.

  2. Step 2

Draw a large letter S coming out of one of the edges of the diamond. The S will be spine of the salamander from the neck, through the body and the tail. Make sure it is long enough.

  3. Step 3

Make two more S's by following the one you drew in Step 2. The first S should begin half way to the edge of the head and the S shape in Step 2. Keep this new S at this distance for half it's length. Then taper in the line and connect it to the end of the S you drew in Step 2. Repeat this process on the other side to finish drawing the salamander body.

  4. Step 4

Give your salamander arms and legs. Draw four little ovals that are longer than they are wide. There should be two on each side.

  5. Step 5

Put in the salamander toes. One each arm and leg, the salamander has three toes.

  6. Step 6

Take crayons, markers or colored pencils and color your salamander. If you color your salamander black, he will show up best in the flames.

  7. Draw the Flames

  8. Step 1

Choose colors for the flames. Realistic flames are red, orange and yellow. But you can also use other colors too.

  9. Step 2

Use your pencil to draw in the flames.

  10. Step 3

Clean up your drawing by erasing guidelines and mistakes.
