How to Draw a Coiled Snake
Snakes spend much of their time coiled, making a drawing of a coiled snake look like a natural depiction of a snake. The coils can take a little practice to draw, however, and a model of some kind is often needed. If there is not a snake handy for you to use as your model, there are other items that will work almost as well.

1
Set up a model to look at while you draw the coiled snake. A live model would be helpful, but a picture can be just as helpful. If a picture is not available, an extension cord can stand in. Coil the cord in a circle and use it as a guide for drawing the curves and shapes of the coils. The number of coils you draw will depend on the type of snake you want to represent. Make the tail visible by ending one of the coils in a point.

2
Draw the head. If you have a model of a snake, that can be your guide. The head is a basic oval shape. For a poisonous snake, make the nose more pointed. For a non-poisonous snake, keep it rounded. Add the eyes and a forked tongue coming out of the mouth if desired.

3
Fill in the pattern of the scales. The specific pattern will depend on the type of snake, or you can draw a series of stripes or diamonds.

4
Color in the drawing. Make the colors coordinate to the snake type, or color it more fancifully. Some snakes are all one color. Coloring the entire snake green or black is just as realistic as a color pattern.
