How to Brake and Stop a Car Quickly

There are a number of reasons why you will want to be able to brake quickly with your vehicle. There are just as many instances when you will need to stop on a dime. While you might be into showing off by stopping and starting your car quickly, you'll also want to use those brake pads to help you avoid an accident.

1. Check out your brake pads and rotors before trying to stop the car quickly. If there is any kind of squeak or grating sound, the brakes may give out if you hit them too fast or too hard and you will not make your stop.

2. Stay off the brakes as long as you can before hitting them hard. Riding the brakes will increase the heat in the pads and create less friction for them to grab. If you've been coasting and using the brakes a lot, don't expect to stop quickly.

3. Adjust your brake mechanisms by drilling small holes in the rotors to release the heat caused by braking. You also can purchase rotors with the holes already drilled. This can help to relieve the friction from the heat and allow you to brake more efficiently more often. You can start and stop rapidly without waiting for the brakes to cool off.

4. Put all your weight onto the brakes if you have an anti-lock braking system. This will bring your vehicle to an immediate stop and not throw you into a skid. If you don't have ABS, then you may want to consider throwing the clutch into reverse to get a quick stop. This could harm the transmission, but may save your life if you need to stop quickly to avoid an accident.
