How to Dress for a Safari

If you are planning a safari, particularly an African safari, you'll have to put more thought into how to pack than you would on a regular vacation. Safaris typically take you to remote locations with extremes in temperature. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you dress for a safari.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Light jacket
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Lightweight pants or khakis
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses or sunscreen
Step1
Think layers. Because the areas usually visited by safari can range wildly in temperature, it's best to dress in layers. That way you can remove extra clothing during the day when its at its hottest and cover up at night.
Step2
Dress in muted colors. Most safaris take you into the jungles or other wild places looking for rare or unusual animals in their natural habitat. Animals will be more likely to come closer to you or not notice you at all if you blend in with them by wearing natural or muted colors.
Step3
Consider long pants and sleeves. Mosquitoes aren't only pesky nuisances, but can be dangerous because they can transmit yellow fever or malaria. Wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid getting bitten.
Step4
Wear a hat. While a pith helmet may make you feel like a dashing adventurer, nothing screams tourist louder. An everyday hat with a brim can be helpful to protect you from both rain and the harsh rays of the sun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen are also a good idea to take with you on safari to avoid getting a nasty sunburn.
  • Dress modestly. Many safaris take place in conservative or religious countries and its best not to draw too much attention to yourself or offend anyone by showing too much skin.
