The theory behind the Zone Diet is that excess insulin makes us fat. The plan calls for the close regulation of our blood sugar levels to stay in the Zone. It takes the perfect balance of carbs, proteins and fats at every meal. It is a relatively complicated balancing act. But, there are some short cuts you can take to stay on plan a little bit easier.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Aim to reach "The Zone" during every meal and snack. That means 40 percent of your calories come from carbohydrates, 30 percent from protein and 30 percent from fat. This is the 40:30:30 ratio.

  2. Step 2

Stick to eating your allocated number of Zone Food Blocks at each meal and snack. Dr. Barry Sears designed this diet to help you lose weight.

  3. Step 3

Buy the Zone diet book, "Enter the Zone", by Dr. Sears. You really need it to avoid mistakes on the Zone Diet. Buy pre-packaged Zone Diet meals and snacks to make the plan easier. They'll deliver them right to your home.

  4. Step 4

Use the Zone's website, Enter the Zone Diet, to calculate your daily blocks. The website will also help you divide them through the day. This makes it much easier to stay on track and avoid mistakes.

  5. Step 5

Keep it as simple as possible in your head. The Zone diet involves cutting out most carbohydrates, because they have a big effect on your blood sugar levels. Know that most vegetables and fruits are okay.

  6. Step 6

Order low-fat foods that are rich in proteins when you eat out. Skinless chicken, fish and turkey are a must for every meal.

  7. Step 7

Divide your plate into three equal sections. One section should hold low-fat protein like chicken. Make sure it's no thicker or larger than the palm of your hand. Put vegetables and fruit in the other two sections of the plate. Add a few nuts or a little olive oil for some good fat.
