Step 1
Learn the controls. The controls for Team Fortress 2 on the PC are like most first person shooters on the PC. It employs the "WASD" control scheme, which lets you walk forward with "W" and backwards with "S" while moving side to side with the "A" and "D" keys. The left mouse button is your primary fire and the right mouse button is your special ability, which is dependent on your class. You can find the rest of the key commands and re-map them if necessary in the options window.
-
Step 2
Choose your game mode. "Capture the intelligence" is a capture the flag type game. You must capture the other team's intelligence and return it to your base. In the "control points" mode, teams must capture the control points and hold them from the other team. There is a variation of the control points mode where one team begins with all of the control points and the other team must attempt to capture them. Another variation of the control points mode is the territory control. There are only two control points at a time and once the control points are controlled, a team can directly attack the other team's base.
-
Step 3
Pick a class. The classes are what really make Team Fortress 2 a lot of fun. There are nine different classes: scout, soldier, pyro, demoman, heavy, engineer, medic, sniper and spy. There are different strengths and weaknesses with all the classes. For instance, the scout is the fastest class, but cannot take much damage, while the "heavy" is the most powerful but is painfully slow. Be flexible so that you can use whatever class is necessary to improve your team.
-
Step 4
Master the maps. Learning the maps will give you a strong advantage. You are going to have to play for a little while before you really get all of the levels down, so try to set up a game with some friends that you can just explore without fear of death. Start with 2Fort as it is the map you will probably play the most.
-
Step 5
Play as a team. Teamwork is key to Team Fortress 2. It's the name of the game. A good team consists of several different character classes working together. Don't pigeonhole yourself to one job or class. Be flexible enough to play the role that the teams needs, and be sure to be a team player.
