Step 1
Separate all the baby clothes by three categories. Darks, Colors and Whites/Very Lights. Each category will be a different load of wash. (wools, silks and other fine fabrics should be washed separately by hand in cool water with a mild detergent and line dried)
-
Step 2
Put in an entire load of wash in the machine. (less than a full load is not an environmentally or financially good option)
-
Step 3
Follow directions on your baby safe detergent. Preferably one without fragrances and dyes. Not all baby detergent is fragrance free, in fact, the top sellers are not, read labels! Fragrances are carcinogenic and may actually trigger an allergic response.
-
Step 4
For Dark wash, use only cold water. Colors use warm water. Lights and Whites use hot water or warm water (warm will be cost efficient). Be sure to use the double rinse feature on your machine so that you remove all the detergent residue.

Step 5
Dry your baby's clothes in the dryer, line dry or on a rack. This is really just a preference and not a rule. However, I do not suggest line drying baby clothes outside during spring and fall because of the environmental allergens in the air that will contaminate your baby's clothing.
