Rebounding is at its core about desire and fundamentals. There have been players that are smaller and less athletic than others are but still were great rebounders. However, when you combine desire, fundamentals and immense physical skill, you get Dwight Howard. Howard is a rebounding machine and was the youngest player in NBA history to lead the league in rebounding.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep it simple when attempting to snare a rebound. Rebounding is a state of mind. In an interview with "Orlando Sentinel", Dwight said the following about rebounding, "My whole take is just knowing, mentally, that I can get any rebound I want if I put my mind to it. It's not that complicated." Therefore, you need to understand that rebounding is about fundamentals, and if you do the fundamental things, like blocking out, you will be an excellent rebounder.

  2. Step 2

Have a willingness and desire to get the rebound when there is a loose ball. Dwight Howard takes pride in his rebounding and believes that every rebound belongs to him and plays that way. In an interview with "Stack" magazine, Dwight said, "If I want it, I need to really go for it. That's the best thing to think about when rebounding. You need to want the ball more and go get it."

  3. Step 3

Understand positional rebounding. Most people think that rebounding is about jumping the highest, but in reality, it is about getting to a spot where the errant shot is going. Howard not only jumps high, but he positions his body on the floor so that he can get rebounds over a wide area of the court.

  4. Step 4

Work on your rebounding skills just as you would on shooting or defense. Dwight Howard takes rebounding seriously and makes it a primary part of his off-season workouts. If a person does not work on a specific skill like rebounding, it can suffer just like his shot if he does not work hard on his shooting form.
