Ryan Howard made himself a well-known Major League Baseball player in 2005 when he hit 22 home runs and won the Rookie of the Year award, despite playing in only 88 games. Since 2005 he has become one of the most prolific home run hitters in baseball. Few baseball players will ever hit a home run exactly like Ryan Howard, but some tactics can help.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Aim home runs to all fields. Most left-handed home run hitters hit their home runs to right field. However, Ryan Howard often hits home runs to left field and center field, in addition to right field. He hits outside pitches to left field and pitches down the middle or inside to center field or right field.

  2. Step 2

Hit the home run a long distance. Ryan Howard has been known to hit home runs as long as 500 feet, which is as far as any hitter in baseball.

  3. Step 3

Look for a fastball. Ryan Howard hits most of his home runs off of fastballs.

  4. Step 4

Lift weights. Hitting home runs to the opposite field and hitting 500-foot home runs requires great strength. A strict regimen of exercise, weight lifting and a healthy diet helps to develop this strength.

  5. Step 5

Develop quick bat speed. Ryan Howard often waits until the last possible moment to swing, allowing him to get a good read on pitches. Doing this requires great bat speed, which requires upper body strength and quick wrists.

  6. Step 6

Run around the bases casually. A lot of baseball players put on a flashy show after a home run. However, Ryan Howard keeps it casual. He drops the bat and runs around the bases in a calm manner.
