Things You'll Need:
- Piercing Buzzer or a Clicker
- Dog
-
Step 1
Purchase a buzzer or clicker. Use something that has a piercing sound and gets your dog's attention right away.
-
Step 2
Pick a place to start training. It can be in your bedroom, living room or any place you and the dog are together a lot. It is usually better to pick a place where the dog seems more threatened and barks the most.
-
Step 3
Make sure there are no little ones around for the dog to bite. Also, make sure there are no other kids to bother him or get his attention of what you are trying to do. Do not keep everybody out, but just make sure the kids do not try and interrupt what you are doing. Let everyone come and go like they usually do.
-
Step 4
Sound off your buzzer or clicker and say, "Stop!" or, "No!" or both as soon as your dog barks at the least little thing. At first, he may continue barking, but keep the sound going and try to look him in the eyes.
-
Step 5
Be persistent. Do not give up even if it takes a few hours or even days. With my dog, he slowed up on his barking after a few hours.
-
Step 6
Allow the others in the house to use the buzzer, too, after your dog gets the hang of it. He has to learn respect for others, not just you. If he thinks you are the only one who is going to reinforce the discipline, he will still take advantage of the rest of the family.
-
Step 7
Reinforce this method when walking your dog or when you take her outside. Take your buzzer with you and follow the same instructions as before. If your dog is hard to manage, make sure you keep her on a leash even if you have a fence.
