Popcorn ceilings are a texture that is sprayed and has the appearance of “popcorn” or “cottage ceiling.” Most of the popcorn ceilings are white. They are very difficult to clean.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • Latex Paint (if you wish to paint)
  1. Step 1

Cobwebs and dust accumulates on the ceiling. The easiest way to clean a popcorn ceiling is using a vacuum cleaner.

  2. Step 2

Hold the wand of the vacuum cleaner about one inch from the ceiling surface and remove the cobwebs and dust from the ceiling.

  3. Step 3

If the ceiling from age is discolored there is no way to “clean it” without repainting it.

  4. Step 4

If you want to paint the ceiling it is not good to roll paint it. By roll painting it will absorb most of the paint and you can not get a good even coverage of the ceiling. In some cases by roll painting it can remove the “cottage cheese” texture and this will leave a strip of the drywall bare.

  5. Step 5

Spray painting the ceiling is the best and most efficient way. Use a flat latex paint.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using a broom to sweep could remove the “popcorn” that is loose.
