Leaving comments on articles here on eHow is an indispensable ingredient in ensuring eHow's quality of information sharing. Unfortunately, it is also often forgotten or shrugged off as something that takes too much time and means little. Once you know how comments can be used, you'll see the importance of using this feature to it's fullest.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • An eHow account

Step1
You need to have an account with eHow to leave comments. You do not have to be a contributing writer to have an account. ((but why not, writing for eHow is so easy, it's addictive)
Step2
Once you have read an article you feel you can chime an opinion on, do so! You could have something constructive to contribute, praises, gratitude to express, something useful to add or even just something silly.
Step3
Once you have commented on an article, be sure to also leave a rating. Ratings are given by clicking on the stars at the top of each article. You click on one star. The one to the farthest left would be a 1-star rating and that's the worst possible rating. Clicking the star furthest to the right is a 5-star rating and is considered the highest possible rating and thereby for those articles you really enjoyed. If you've taken the time to comment, you need to take the time to also rate. It's only one click and it means a LOT to the writer's of the articles for you to take that extra moment. After all, they took the time to write up the article and share that information with you.
Step4
Be specific in your comments. Say exactly why you did or didn't like the article. Saying "nice, thanks" is better than nothing but saying something specific such as "Great article. I would have never thought chocolate could help me lose weight" *kidding* or maybe tell them something direct such as "I think my niece could use this information to help plan her upcoming wedding, thank you." See how those comments are much more meaningful?
Step5
If you've rated highly, say so. I try to remember to add "rated 5 stars" at the end of my comments for articles I leave 5 stars for. It lets the writer know you did this (and they may feel inclined to return the favor.) and it will attract more people to be on your friend's list (hey, I want them to see/rate my articles too!). And since writer's don't have any way of knowing who left them what type of rating and why, it's just nice to let them know once in a while.
Step6
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that your comments are a direct reflection on yourself. Leave unnecessarily nasty comments and nobody will want much to do with you. If bad enough, you may even get thrown off the site. If you leave constructive comments, the writer and others may really appreciate you and may even want to see what articles you have written. Same thing with leaving very nice comments. With this in mind, if your a writer, it will pay dividends to leave lots of comments. The writer will be intrigued enough to go check out your profile/articles and so may many of the readers.
Step7
Simply put... reward good content while surfing eHow. It's not only appreciated but it will help drive writer's to churn out quality content that will enrich the site as a whole.

on 4/10/2008 I never thought of telling my comment recipient about the stars! I try not to forget to rate, but I have never mentioned it to anybody. I gave this article 5 stars, btw. Just thought you'd like to know.
