Step 1
Be aware of others when in public spaces. Although it is unnecessary to make special accommodations because you have children, if your baby has been crying for over 10 minutes, you need to step outside for a minute as common courtesy. Teach your kids to grow up being cordial.
-
Step 2
Don't leave a mess behind. Kids are expected to be messy to a degree, but if it grosses you out, chances are it looks twice as bad to someone else. If you are in a restaurant or public place, tidy up a little or tip the busser a little extra for the trouble.
-
Step 3
Teach your children to have manners. Teach them how to behave properly in a restaurant. Teach them how to interact with other children. Teach them how to act in public. Teach them to grow up with self-respect. You are your child's role model; be a respectful parent by raising respectful children.
-
Step 4
Understand that your children might not be as cute to everyone else as they are to you. The way your daughter read out loud for that entire 3-hour plane trip might have impressed you, but I lost interest after about 30 minutes. Although it is important for people to be understanding of children, there needs to be a respect line drawn once the child's conduct is interrupting other people's space or comfort.
-
Step 5
Being a respectful parent also means expressing consideration towards your kids. Listen and try to understand them, try to see life from their perspective and try to offer fun, creative activities to play together. Be patient and understanding of your children's needs.
-
Step 6
Although it might seem difficult to raise respectful children in what can be such a disrespectful world, it is important. Our children are our future; by showing common courtesy as a parent, you are paving an optimistic path.
