Our children are our future leaders, so it is the job of parents to raise their children to be happy, healthy and productive adults, while educating them about the political aspects of how things are done in our country. Every day parents have opportunities to influence their child’s political views simply by setting an example and passing their views onto their children. Living in the same environment as you and hearing your viewpoint while they are growing up could have an impact on their own political beliefs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Include them in discussions with the whole family. Make an effort to talk about the presidential candidates with your children and let them know what each of the parties stand for and against. Give them examples of some of the issues that divide the parties. You can add your opinion into the discussion to influence your child’s political views.

  2. Step 2

Pass your view onto your children as you watch television programs together. Some things on TV today are quite controversial and are perfect opportunities to discuss your views with your children. Making comments during television watching with your children could also influence their political views. Ask their opinions also.

  3. Step 3

Do things in either a conservative or liberal fashion. If they see that you do things in a conservative manner, chances are good that they will follow your example. The same would be true if your actions primarily represent a liberal view, it will become instilled in your child. Actions sometimes speak louder than words and children learn by their parents’ example.

  4. Step 4

Prepare a mock voting poll, if the child is old enough to understand what it means to vote. By letting them see how the voting system works it will enhance the importance that they place in casting their vote, when the time comes. It should be stressed, also, that it is not just our right to vote, but our duty as Americans, as well.

  5. Step 5

Watch the presidential debate together as a family. Young children will not be too interested and teenagers may not even enjoy sitting through it either. You could make some popcorn to make it seem more fun, because lets be honest, it is interesting to some, but quite boring to others. If you insist that they watch at least a small portion with you, then you can start discussions to get them more interested and encourage them to express their feelings too.
