Step 1
First, don't be surprised if things don't work out right away, especially if you started out on the wrong foot. While things may not always be easy, they can certainly be better!

Treat your stepchild as you would treat your own biological child: with love, respect, and honor. Show them how much you care with hugs! Tell them that you are proud of them and that you are happy to have them in your life.

Step 3
Include your stepchild in your side of the family as well. Make sure others acknowledge your stepchild as your child as well. Invite all sides of the family to birthday parties and celebrations.

Have patience. Don't move too quickly. Earning friendship is hard enough without other strains involved! Take baby steps. Let your stepchild know that you will be there for him or her, no matter what!
