Step 1
Brush twice, floss and rinse with mouthwash daily. Go to the dentist for check-ups every six to 12 months to make sure your gums and teeth are clean and healthy. Be aware of your oral hygiene.
-
Step 2
Minimize your intake of foods and drinks that stain your teeth easily--for example, teas, coffee, red wine and dark sodas. Drinks that stain are often acidic and soften the outer layer of tooth enamel, allowing the stain to set in slightly (saliva and fluoride help to harden enamel). Drink red wine with water to help flush your teeth every so often.
-
Step 3
Use a fluoride rinse or hydrogen peroxide to clean and rinse off stain or grime after eating. You can also brush with baking soda (which is slightly abrasive) to really scrub your teeth after a heavy meal or a bottle of red wine.
-
Step 4
Quit smoking. Smoking is bad for both your gums and teeth and can lead to discoloration.
-
Step 5
Use self-bleaching kits or home whitening strips to help lighten any discoloration, usually daily. Sometimes these kits make your teeth slightly sensitive but they do work for short term purposes.
