How to Plant Under Black Walnut Trees

Black Walnut trees produce a chemical called juglone, which is toxic to many plants in a sixty to eighty foot radius around the tree. All hope is not lost, though. There are several plants that are not affected by this chemical. Here are some of your choices.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Snowdrops Plant juglone tolerant bulbs. Siberian squill, snowdrops, and glory-of-the-snow are all excellent choices and thrive under black walnut trees.
Step2
Bleeding Hearts Plant juglone tolerant perennials. Bellflowers, bleeding heart and plantain lilies are all juglone tolerant and look great in flowerbeds.
Step3
Periwinkle Plant juglone tolerant ground covers such as European wild ginger or periwinkle. There are many plants that are juglone tolerant, so check with your local nursery or extension office.
