Things You'll Need:
- paper
- pencil
- an eraser
- photo album (if it helps to bring back memories) and to assist in which photograph to use with the obituary
-
Step 1
Losing a parent is never easy. Writing your parent’s obituary is like writing a short story about their life; history on your parent, their greatest accomplishments (including you), and who they left behind.
When writing out you mother or father’s obituary, include their birth date and where they were born. Some people like to include where their parent’s went to high school and if they went to college, where they went. You can also include where you mother or father had worked before their passing. In addition to your parent’s working background, you can also include some of their hobbies or where they once volunteered their time at. -
Step 2
If your mother or father relocated it is also nice to include where they relocated to before their passing.
If you cannot think of things to add, browsing through an old photo album may help to stir up some memories. This will also assist in making the final decision when choosing which photograph to accompany the obituary. Choose an relatively good sized photograph. It is also a good idea to avoid photographs that will require cropping an individual out or a shirt with wording on it. -
Step 3
Adding how your parents met is also a nice touch if the two were still married before their passing. In addition to your parent’s marriage, include who has preceded them in death and who are the survivors.
-
Step 4
Be sure to include service time and location and where people can send their condolences. If you request that people do not send flowers or monetary donations, it is nice to request that mourners send monetary donations in lieu of flowers to an organization that your mother or father felt strongly about.
