Many people know that gravy and biscuits are a Southern favorite for breakfast, but not many know that chocolate gravy and biscuits are a welcome substitute. Southern children have enjoyed this chocolate treat for years and many have grown up to serve it at their own breakfast table. Things You'll Need

  • 2 heaping tbsp. cocoa
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt (optional)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Plastic spatula
  • Sauce pan
  • Peanut butter (optional)

Instructions

      Combine cocoa, sugar and flour in a mixing bowl and mix well until thoroughly blended and there are no lumps remaining in the mixture. Add milk and stir or whisk until well blended.

      Pour into a saucepan, scraping the sides of the mixing bowl with a plastic spatula to transfer all of the mixture. Cook on the stovetop over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches the thickness of gravy.

      Turn off the burner and remove the pan from heat taking care not to touch the hot pan or burn your countertop surface. Stir in butter and vanilla and continue stirring until butter is melted.

      Serve the hot chocolaty gravy over warm, fluffy homemade biscuits. Substitute biscuit mix, frozen or canned biscuits if you have not yet mastered the art of the light and fluffy from-scratch biscuit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Variations on this recipe call for adding a dash of salt and/or cinnamon to the dry ingredients. Sometimes getting just the right recipe for your family's palate takes a little practice.

  • Buttering or even spreading a layer of peanut butter on your biscuits prior to pouring the gravy over adds a richer flavor.
