Step 1
Start giving your children easy chores at a young age and gradually ease them into more responsibility.

Make it clear and concise what you want them to do. A list may be helpful so they can check things off as they go.

Give your child a choice, on the above list you may have 5 chores listed and only require your child to complete 3. This way they get a say in what they are doing.

Step 4
Talk with your children and set time limits. For example, "If you can have the dishes done and your room cleaned in 30 minutes then you can have an hour of television."

And finally, have a rewards system. Positive reinforcement will go a long way with cooperation.

on 6/1/2008 Yes, kids should do chores or at least pick up after themselves. I've known people who disagree, but young people must learn responsibility and personal pride.
