How to Soothe Aching Feet

It might be time to rethink your shoes.

Like any other symptom, aching feet can have many causes. If you have a medical condition that causes foot pain, such as arthritis, diabetes or gout, you need to discuss foot care with your doctor. If your foot pain, however, is caused by spending a lot of time on your feet or by the shoes you wear, some simple measures at home can help soothe your aching feet at the end of the day. You may even find that if you take the time to pamper your feet, they might be less sore after a day at work.

Instructions

    • 1

Experiment by wearing different shoes or buying better quality shoes. High heels are often a source of foot pain, especially if you wear them often. Even flats can cause foot pain if they fit poorly or give poor shock absorption and support.

    • 2

Take some time at the end of your day to rest and pamper your feet.

    • 3

Elevate your feet for 10 to 20 minutes by lying on the floor and resting your feet on edge of a chair, or lying on a bed and resting your feet on the headboard. This helps bring down any swelling of the feet and ankles and can relieve aching.

    • 4

Soak your feet in a tub of cold water for 15 minutes. Add ice if you find this comfortable or soothing. Again, this helps reduce swelling.

    • 5

Treat your feet to a massage. Rub lotion gently all over your feet, focusing on bringing circulation to any particularly sore areas you discover.

Tips & Warnings

  • If foot pain is severe or persistent, see your doctor.

  • Avoid wearing high heel shoes every day.
