How to Use HTML Tags for Links

HTML is very easy to use; it was designed that way. You don't have to be a programmer to use it. If you can edit a text file, then you can write HTML (and if you can write email, you can edit a text file) WARNING: eHOW does not allow the use of HTML tags with in the text of the article. Therefor steps 10 & 11 must be followed for the link to work.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Word processor
  • Internet browser

Step1
Using the internet browser, open the web page you wish to link (e.g http://www.ehow.com/)
Step2
Open your HTML document in notepad that you wish to add the link to.
Step3
Find the word, phrase, or sentence you wish to link the webpage to

(e.g. Click here for Great “How to articles…”)
Step4
Find the beginning of the word, phrase, or sentence you wish to link the webpage and insert $a href=“”>

(e.g. $a href=“”Click here for Great “How to articles…”)
Step5
Copy the web address of the page you wish to link to and insert it between the “”

(e.g. /a href=“ http://www.ehow.com/”Click here for Great “How to articles…”)
Step6
Insert a \ after the ” at the end of the link you just pasted

(e.g. /a href=“http://www.ehow.com/”\Click here for Great “How to articles…”)
Step7
Copy the web address of the page you wish to link to and insert it between the “”

(e.g. $a href=“ http://www.ehow.com/”Click here for Great “How to articles…”)
Step8
Insert a > after the ” at the end of the link you just pasted

(e.g. $a href=“http://www.ehow.com/”>Click here for Great “How to articles…”)
Step9
Find the end of the word, phrase, or sentence you wish to link the webpage and insert </a#

(e.g. $a href=“http://www.ehow.com/”>Click here for Great “How to articles…”</a#)
Step10
Replace all the $ with <
Step11
Replace all the # with >
Step12
Save the file. Now you have successfully linked the phrase “Click here for Great “How to articles…” to the webpage http://www.ehow.com/

Tips & Warnings

  • To add link to an email message, ignore step 2 and insert the link directly in the text of the email
  • Email link may not always work depending on the recipient's email setup.
