Try to keep your car maintained. Keeping up on regular maintenance on your car such as oil changes and properly inflated tires will allow your car to run more efficiently.
Step2
Do not drive aggressively. Aggressive driving is not only dangerous but it can lead to unnecessary gas use by increased acceleration and braking. Maintaining a steady speed is the key for saving gas. As for long distances, use cruise control
Step3
Consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle. Despite the up front cost of a hybrid vehicle, the savings in gasoline usage will pay for itself. Not to mention, the potential tax credit for purchasing a hybrid which could save you hundreds by years end.
Step4
Lastly, combine your errands. Planning your travel in advance will maximize your time on the road. If it’s in route no need to make a separate trip.

To really make your pennies count, you can reduce the weight of the car itself. Since most people commute alone, they could easily give up their front and rear passenger seats. They could also strip door panels, glove compartments, roof liners, carpeting, and any other strictly cosmetic components. Of course you might want to purchase an inexpensive used car for this purpose. Then if you're truly committed, you might also consider driving nude -- just be sure to keep an extra suit or two at the office.

First of all good article. Step 2 is totally true in regards to aggressive driving, however using cruise on hilly terrain will get you worse mileage because it will accelerate almost to full throttle if necessary to maintain preset speed on the uphill, and decelrate to preset on the downhill. A human driver driving conservatively would accelerate slightly on the downhill taking advantage of gravity, and shave off a few MPH on the uphill to avoid hard acceleration
