How to Know if Herbal Medicine is for You

Some people think that if they have something wrong with them, they should either take herbal medicine or go to the doctor.

There are two things wrong with this line of thinking. The first is that the two don't need to be mutually exclusive. You can do both. The second is that herbal medicine works best if you use it as prevention, not to help "cure."

But how can you really be sure if you should use herbal medicine or not? Here are some tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A doctor, herbalist and/or a naturopath to consult with
  • Research materials to learn about the herbs
  • A solid understanding of any ailments you may have
  • The herbs you plan to take

Step1
CONSULT WITH AN EXPERT

The first thing you should do is consult with an expert such as a doctor, herbalist or naturopath before you make any solid decisions about treatment. If you can, consult with all three because they each have different insights and ideas.

You'll want to be upfront about your symptoms and current ailments so that they can figure out the best way to help you.
Step2
RESEARCH THE HERBS

If you want to take herbs to boost your health or support an existing condition, you'll need to research them for yourself. It is too easy to shop for an herb or a blend and take it blindly. But, they come attached with side effects and risks just like anything else.
Step3
LEARN ABOUT YOUR AILMENTS

It is also important to learn about your ailments. If you skip this step, you could end up undergoing a treatment schedule that is a waste of time. And by learning about the ailments, you'll be better equipped to make a decision between the two systems.
Step4
MAKE THE RIGHT SELECTIONS

If you do decide to take herbs, make sure you find the preparations that you are comfortable taking. Also, keep in mind that certain herbs are best prepared in certain ways. For example, a leaf works well as a tea or a tincture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shop around to find the right experts to consult with.
  • You can buy any herbs you need online or at a health food store.
  • Don't attempt to diagnose yourself. Always find a doctor.
