If you're like countless other Americans who enjoy saving money whenever possible, then you've likely considered moving your self rather than hiring a moving company. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages to both options, but, ultimately, renting a truck to move on your own is the most economical choice. Follow the steps below to easily rent moving trucks and ensure you get the best deal for your next move.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Book your truck early, especially during warmer seasons. The last thing you need to discover when you're planning to move is that there is that you have to wait several weeks before you can secure a vehicle. Calling a truck rental company weeks or even months in advance will almost guarantee a truck is available for you, particularly during spring and summer, the more popular moving seasons.

  2. Step 2

Be certain the date you've chosen is set in stone before you call the rental company so as to decrease the potential for unexpected delays.

  3. Step 3

Inquire about the cost of renting hand trucks and moving pads. Most moving truck rental companies do not include this in the overall rental fee. Instead, you'll have to pay for them separately.

  4. Step 4

Ask about the company's policies regarding additional miles, returning the truck on a full tank, and the quality of gas the truck uses. You must also ask the rental company for the location of their nearest lot if you are moving one way. If your move is local, then you need to know if you'll be done with the truck before they close or if you need to add an extra day.

  5. Step 5

Visit the moving truck rental company prior to your move to check out the trucks they use. Test drive one of the moving trucks to ensure you are comfortable with the vehicle before you commit to rental. Take the truck for a test drive around the lot and become acquainted with making wide turns. Pay attention to the truck's clearance and ask the company what their coverage entails.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find out if an extra license is required to drive the moving truck.
