PLANTS CAN HAVE A LONG & HEALTHY LIFE IN A JAR
PLANTS CAN HAVE A LONG & HEALTHY LIFE IN A JAR

A apothecary jar can add a real spark of life to any setting, the glass catches light and you can grow so many wonderful plants inside of them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

If you don't already own a apothecary jar, they are easy to find. Really, any jar with a lid will work, i have even planted a glass decanter. Start by cleaning the jar. Next you'll want to line the bottom and sides of the jar with green moss. If your using dried moss, soak it in tepid water for 10 minutes to rehydrate. Line your jar only about halfway up the sides, you'll need the room for plants to grow.

  2. Step 2

Add a single layer of pebbles at the bottom of the moss to keep excess water from plant roots. Now add a high quality potting mix to within a few inches of the top of moss. Make sure not to add too much soil at this time, it's easier to add than to take away.

  3. Step 3

Almost any tropical plant would love the moist environment of a enclosed jar. Don't try for succulents though, the air is too moist for them. Put your plant in the pocket of soil and add a "small" amount of water. Remember, you've already wet the moss which will add to the moisture. Top off with more moss to cover the soil.

Tips & Warnings
  • I have my jar planted with a Lady Slipper Orchid. They love the humid conditions and will grow and flower very well. You only need to water your jar about once a month as long as you keep the lid on. If you get condensation on the inside of your jar, just leave the lid off for a little while and it will evaporate.
  • Do not leave your jar in direct sunlight, the sun will create intense heat and burn your plants and moss.

on 4/12/2008 Great idea!! It would be fun to decorate the jar with polymer clay first and then add the plant!! Thanks for the instructions!
