How to collect a urine sample from a cat

Cats frequently have urinary problems -- and if the problem is caught early enough, you often don't even have to take your cat to the clinic. The vet simply needs a urine sample.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cat with urinary issues
  • CLEAN, empty litter pan
  • unpopped popcorn kernels or clean plastic beads.
  • container to hold urine specimen to take to vet.

Step1
With clean litter pan, add one to two cups of the unpopped popcorn kernels or plastic beads. The cat will use this as "litter."
Step2
Confine the cat to a small space with ONLY that litter pan to use.
Step3
Once the cat has urinated in this litterbox, pour ALL contents into container to transport to the vet's office.
Step4
Note the time and any symptoms that would lead you to believe that your cat is having urinary issues. Take the sample to the vet's office.
Step5
If you have been unsuccessful at collecting a sample, call your veterinarian and schedule an appointment. The vet can collect a sample using medical techniques.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have more than one cat, separate them and test the urine EACH cat. DO NOT COMBINE SAMPLES!
  • Clean your litterbox DAILY and always provide one litterbox per cat, plus one.
  • DO NOT IGNORE URINARY ISSUES! Cats can easily have blocked urinary tracts which can lead to a painful death.
