Get your garbage bag ready, kids out of the house, and a few large storage boxes, three to four should be sufficient.
Step2
Sort through the different types of toys, stuffed animals, cars and small pretend play items, crafts, board games and dress up clothing.
Step3
Throw each of these types of items into its own storage box. This is a great time to weed out any broken items, things that aren't played with anymore and things you can put away for a rainy day. You will notice there are toys that haven't been played with in months sometimes even years. More times than not these items have been forgotten and are still in great shape. If your kids haven't outgrown them yet, put them in their own "new" pile for now. If they have outgrown them, donate them, this is a good time to teach your kids about giving and making another child happy.
Step4
Any items you have labeled as "new" can be put away for a rainy day. If your child doesn't remember they have the toy its a good idea to keep it away until they outgrow their current toys.
Step5
Now that all the toys have been separated get your storage unit together and organize the toys by category. Keep all blocks, legos, anything that relates to building, in its own area. Label the boxes or shelving area where these items will be kept. Keep up this routine with the rest of the toys and games. Any stuffed animals can be put in a toy chest, these are easy to clean up and throw in a chest or bin without having to go through a mess of different types of toys. Dress up clothing can be hung on hangers or put in a laundry bag for easy access.
Step6
Label all bins, or take a picture of each type of item and tape to their prospective "home". This makes it less overwhelming for the little ones to figure out where all their belongings should go.
Step7
Set rules, before taking out a new toy or craft item etc. They must put the unused toy away. Another idea is to keep some laundry bags in different areas of the home. If toys end up in other areas of your house, they can easily put everything in a laundry bag when finished playing and bring them to their play area to put away.
Tips & Warnings
Check toys at least once a month. Make sure any broken toys are thrown away.
