Being a fan of any major league baseball team is not difficult. You might like one team based on a certain player, team location, or even the team name. However, picking a team and sticking with them through thick and thin is the hard part. The Chicago Cubs are a prime example (of the thin part). The Cubs have not won a World Series title since 1908. Year after year we all hope that this will be the year. Names such as Steve Bartman and The Goat seem to keep getting in the way. Bad luck and misfortune have followed the team for years. Here are some tips to help you remain a loyal Cubs fan.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • A love of the Cubs
  • Thick skin
  • Sense of humor
Step1
Decide you will be loyal every year. Many fans are of the ‘fair weather’ variety. When their team is good, they cheer as loud as anyone. However, when their team is bad, they quickly jump ship and ally with the team on top. As a Cubs fan, you must continue to always be a fan. The year will come when a World Series will again be won by the North Siders. It can happen—just look at the Red Sox!
Step2
Take criticism. As a loyal Cubs fan, you will be criticized. It’s inevitable. These are the fair weather fans who will likely be crooning the loudest. You may notice they always seem to be cheering for the winner. Maintain a thick skin and remember to not resort to violence. (An ‘I Love the Cubs’ bumper sticker that just happens to show up on their car, however, is acceptable.)
Step3
Ryne Sandberg Always be prepared for victory. As I’ve said before, the Championship that eluded players like Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Furgusen Jenkins, Keith Moreland, Ryne Sandberg, Jody Davis, and Leon Durham will eventually come to a very deserving group of Cubs players and fans. When that day arrives, your chance to be ecstatic will have come. Enjoy it. You never know how many years it will be until the next World Series champs call Wrigley Field home.

Tips & Warnings

  • Facts about Wrigley Field:
  • The ivy on the outfield wall has been a fixture for many decades.
  • The scoreboard is still hand operated.
  • A statue of Ernie Banks now resides outside the field near the intersection of Clark and Addison.
  • Being a loyal Cubs fan is a lifelong love affair full of ups and downs and more downs.
