This how-to is dedicated to my Mom who apparently, has lost the recipe as is the case with many.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Purchase ice-cube trays. Ice cube trays come in many different sizes and shapes. Get ones with rounded corners so that they will let go of the cubes easily. Also, make sure they are flexible so they don’t break when you twist them to release the ice cubes. Wash the trays before use.
Step2
Fill with water. If you drink bottled or filtered water, vs. tap water, use that for your cubes. My sister used to think that, for some odd reason, if you start with hot water, it will freeze faster. This is a myth. Actually it’s not even a myth. No one believes that and there is no evidence to this. In fact putting hot water in the freezer will thaw it out.
Step3
Put the trays in the freezer and wait several hours. Once frozen, you can choose to remove the cubes from the tray and put them in an ice bucket. If you do this, do not wet the trays to remove the cubes as they will melt slightly. The slight melt, will cause them to re-freeze into one big cube in the bucket.

on 7/21/2008 Your sister isn't totally off track, there is something called Mpemba effect where hot water freezes more quickly than cold. Also, just a helpful hint, if you twist your plastic ice cube trays as you are turning out the ice cubes, they come out easier. :)

on 5/10/2008 So you’re saying that after I take the ice out of the ice cube tray, placing the empty tray back into the freezer will not yield more ice? Boy, I’m glad I stumbled across this recipe. Do have any tips on how to get a fresh roll of toilet paper to appear on the empty dispenser?

on 5/1/2008 A simple, yet forgotten recipe. Thanks for posting. Now, maybe when I visit the inlaws they will actually serve chilled drinks.

on 3/31/2008 I agree wholeheartedly with the entire article. I think there is just a samll group of individuals left in the world that will actually still participate in this endeavor. I believe we are in that minority group. :)
