Make a Baby Shower Diaper Cake

The Diaper Cake is an increasingly popular baby shower gift. A "cake" that is made of diapers, rattles, baby clothes and other tiny items is sure to get "oohs" and "aahs" and "oh how cute!" from the crowd, and can take the place of the ever popular memorize the items on the tray game. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum pizza tray
  • 2 packages of small diapers
  • 20-30 rubber bands
  • 1.5"-2" ribbon
  • 3+ Receiving blankets
  • Assortment of baby items such as small bottles, rattles, booties, diaper rash cream, lotion, shampoo, or anything else you can think of.

Instructions

    • 1

To start the base you will need the pizza tin or cake decorating stand (to help shape and support the base of your cake) and a receiving blanket. Cover the base with the blanket so the material cannot be seen. If you do not want to give a base with the cake, just use the base as a guide for shape and size initially.

    • 2

Start to roll your diapers. Take a diaper right out of the package and roll it up like a burrito. Start at the folded end and roll tightly until the diaper is completely rolled up. Wrap with a rubber band and continue the same process with the next diaper.

    • 3

When you complete rolling the second diaper, put it next to the first diaper and rubber band them together using the rubber band from the first diaper. This keeps the diaper from unrolling / opening up. Continue this process until you can no longer fit diapers into the rubber band.

    • 4

Complete steps 2 and 3 until all but 5-10 of the diapers are rolled up.

    • 5
      Bottom Layer

Arrange a layer of diapers on the base so it forms a round cake-like form. Once you have them laid out in a circle, tie the thick ribbon around them tightly to hold them all in place. Once the ribbon has been tied, you can cut and remove the rubber bands and the ribbon will hold the diapers in a nice, round cake-like shape.

      Two Layers Together

On the top of the first layer arrange a receiving blanket to look like "icing" which helps the next layer to stay secure and makes the entire project look less like a group of diapers. Repeat steps 2-5 for the next 1-3 layers, depending on the size of diaper cake you are making.

    • 7

Once you complete all layers of the diaper cake, it is time to add in the goodies. Removing diapers 1 at a time to ensure the integrity of the structure will allow you to insert items that fit snugly into the diaper cake and will be held by the ribbon. Use items such as: bottles, pacifiers, wash cloths, booties, socks, onesies, baby food, rattles, diaper rash ointment, shampoo or other small diaper-sized and baby-themed items.

      Cake with Topper and Goodies

Once you finish placing all items on the cake, you can secure a rattle, bottle, piggy bank or doll on the top layer to serve as a cake topper. Get creative- this will be one of the highlights of your cake!

Tips & Warnings

  • Use this cake to replace the tray in the memory game. Keep the cake out until you are ready to play the game, then announce that everybody has 1 minute to memorize all of the items on the cake. After the minute, take the cake away and give 2 more minutes to write down all of the items they can remember. At the end of the 2 minutes bring back the cake to show everybody the items that were on the cake. The person with the most items on their list wins a prize.

  • Theme the Diaper Cake to match the shower. You can use Precious Moments, Classic Pooh, Pink and Brown or any type of theme you can think of!

Thank you for the nice compliment! The first picture you see is my 1st cake, the rest are from a cake I made this weekend... I really have fun with them and they are really easy to make once you get down the pattern.
