  • seeds,soil,styrofoam cups,saran wrap,plastic trays,permanent marker,and scissor.
  1. Step 1
    The choices are endless <3
    The choices are endless <3

First go pick out seeds that interest you. Keep in mind there are many seeds in one package. Two or three envelopes is a good idea for beginners.

  2. Step 2

Get organized!! Get your seeds, soil, cups, trays and plastic wrap in the room that you have chosen. This will make things move more smoother and enjoyable for yourself. Start by poking a small hole on the bottom of your Styrofoam cups. I like to see how many cups fit into my trays and poke all the hole at once. Usually eighteen 8.5 oz cups fit in your basic 11" x 22 trays.

  3. Step 3

Cut open your soil bag and break up any big or hard packed soil. It will make it easier for you to scoop soil up in a cup.

  4. Step 4

Especially remember if you are dealing with a couple different kinds or plants. You need to write on the cup the name of the plant. Trust me it will be helpful to you later ;)make sure it is a permanent marker or when you water your plants it will just wash off the name.

  5. Step 5

Then fill up all your cups with soil. Just scoop it out the bag. Don't fill it up all the way, just a little more then half. Then sit the cups back into the tray.

  6. Step 6

Then depending on the size of the seeds, put 2 seeds in each cup. Give them some space. Plant shallow, do not shove them down deep. Tiny seeds can be sprinkled on the surface. Then spread a very thin layer of soil over them, just enough to cover it completely.

  7. Step 7

Give them some water. Dampen it enough to settle the soil firmly over the seeds, but do not saturate it. The soil should be damp like a wringed out sponge, not sopping wet. I like a spray bottle, that works nice.

  8. Step 8

Now cover your cups/trays with plastic wrap. Fold it loosely down all around or secure it over the top with a rubber band. This will keep the soil evenly moist while the seeds germinate. Once the seeds begin to sprout, immediately remove the plastic wrap. Do not water the seeds unless the soil begins to dry out.

  9. Step 9

Temperature ~ place the plastic covered seeds in a bright location but out of direct sun. A 70 to 75 degree room is a good temperature for starting most seeds. If your room is cooler, place the seeds up high near the ceiling where warm air rises – see pic

  10. Step 10

Check every day for germination. When they start to come up or sprout, remove the plastic, move into very bright direct light and water as needed to keep the soil slightly damp. Wait for the last frost then transplant outdoors. Congratulations, you’ve done it!!!!!!!!

Tips & Warnings
  • Did you know your spring outdoor flowers are craving a good cup of coffee – compost made with coffee grounds that is. What begins as a great cup of coffee can essentially be a treat for the garden. Coffee grounds can be a valuable source of nutrition for the garden.
