How to Begin the First Stitch in Knitting

Knitting can be a fun and complicated hobby to learn. One of the most difficult aspects of learning to knit is simply beginning a project. Read on to learn how to begin the first stitch when knitting anything from a blanket to a sweater.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

• Knitting needles
• Yarn
• Scissors
• Yarn needle

1. Pull about a twelve inch string from your ball of yarn, leave it attached.
2. Take the end of the string and cross it over itself near the base of the ball of yarn. You should now have a string that is in the shape of the letter "p."
3. Pick up the loop of the "p" and lay it over the yarn that was the base of the "p." You should now have a shape that is similar to a pretzel.
4. Attach the loop to a knitting needle and pull to tighten as necessary. This knot is considered the first stitch.
