How to begin the first stitch in knitting or crocheting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

Pull some yarn from the skein. With your right hand, pick up the end of the yarn. Put it behind your left thumb and hand.

  2. Step 2

Hold the yarn over the end of the yarn coming from the skein.

  3. Step 3

With your left hand, hold the yarn coming from the skein and pull it through the loop on your hand.

  4. Step 4

Pull the yarn snug and you have a loop which is a slip knot. Good Luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you'd like to double check that you have a slip knot, pull both the tail and the yarn from the skein and the knot should pull right out.
  • The starting stitch in knitting and crochet are both the same stitch.
  • You may also want to look under "Casting on" another term used for the first stitch in knitting.
  • If you pull the tail all the way through the loop, you'll have a regular knot. Be careful and practice makes perfect!
