Step1
So you arrive at the dealership. Whether its new or used cars there is always room to negotiate, because what you may or may not realize is that they are getting these cars much much cheaper than they are selling them no matter what they say! And its hard to get that price out of them...anyway you need to be upbeat, and whether you are or not, sound confident about exactly what you want.
Step2
At first don't talk about prices, let them show you what they have and try to read the salesman, see what kind of person this is, is he/she young/old? Confident or not? ect...that will help you realize how you should communicate with them.
Step3
If theres a car you are interested in, and you know that the price its advertised at or the "sticker price" is within your price range, go through all the steps, test drive, be really excited about it, and CONFIDENT, while test driving make a conversation with the salesman, get to know them, joke around a little, make them LIKE you!
Step4
When you get into the office and they are going to sit down with you and take an offer, thats when you talk price, start negotiating reasonably lower that you would want to pay (but within reason), they will go back to their manager or whatever and see if that will work or sometimes they themselves will let you know whether or not. But one thing I can almost guarantee is that they will give you a counter offer, and if you have shown that you are a serious buyer, making a counter offer to their counter offer is not a bad idea, and they may just go for it if they want to sell the car!!!
