How to Use Sophocles Software for Scriptwriting

While Final Draft and Movie Magic are considered to be the standards for scriptwriting formats, there are a number of other programs that will format your screenplay as you type. Sophocles isn’t listed as one of the big two, but it will do everything you want software to do while you write your script.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Go to the Sophocles website and download the trial version of the program.
2. Install the program on your computer by clicking on the setup icon.
3. Open the software and begin to write. The only keys you will need to remember are the "Enter" key for scenes and action and the "Tab" key for characters and dialogue.
4. Revisit the website to pay for the software. At $120.00, the cost is much less than the price for either of the big two.
5. Download the beta of Sophocles 2007 if desired. It boasts a lot of features not available in the current version. Upgrades to the full version of Sophocles 2007 are free to current Sophocles owners.

Tips & Warnings

• The trial version of Sophocles is fully functional except for exporting your script. You can print, but the pages will have a watermark.
• You are allowed to have the paid version of the software on up to three different computers. Just type the key number into their code based registration page and you will be emailed a new unlock code for a different computer.
• The beta version of the software includes tools that will help you develop your story either before you write or while you are working on your screenplay.
• Many production houses and agents recognize the Sophocles extension, which means that you will not have to export your script into a generic format.
