Solar lighting has come a long way in the last decade. No longer are huge panel arrays needed to power the lights. Now a small panel and the use of rechargeable batteries and LED lights have made solar lighting both efficient and affordable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Solar lights
  • Batteries
Step1
Determine what area or areas you wish to have lit up. This can be a pathway, garden areas or the entire patio and yard.
Step2
Visit your local home center and look at the options they have available for solar lighting. From ground level lighting to full-sized tiki-type torches to strings of lights, most home centers have a wide variety.
Step3
Assemble the lights you have chosen according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step4
Place the lights in the desired areas.
Step5
Allow the lights a full day in the sun to reach maximum brightness at night.

Tips & Warnings

  • When the lights start to become dim after sunny days, check the batteries. They may need to be replaced.
  • Solar lights range in price from very cheap to very expensive. Buy the best your budget will allow.
  • Solar lighting can provide a warm, hospitable environment for outdoor parties.
  • Driveways and sidewalks can be lit with solar lighting to help light the way from car to front door.
  • Solar lighting around your home may discourage intruders as they would not have the cover of darkness.
  • Inexpensive solar lighting can be used indoors provided they are placed in a sunny area to charge during the daylight hours.
