How to deal with boredom.

Someone on here told me that a good way to come up with article ideas is to think about something you would like to know the answer to. From time to time we all get bored. We may have plans for the weekend that fall through and suddenly we find ourselves with "nothing to do." This article provides some tips on what you can do for a plan B.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • open mind
  • good imagination

Step1
Especially if the weather is bad the Internet can be a source to get around unexpected boredom. While I certainly wouldn't consider it to be the end all to boredom you can pretty much find information about anything you want on the Internet. Also, if you have an email account that you never delete items from you can do some technical Spring cleaning on your off day. Who knows, while doing this you may even find an old email from a friend you lost touch with or an e-newsletter regarding a topic you forgot about.
Step2
If you know any senior citizens, talk to them about what their life was like years ago. You can do this in person or over the phone if the weather is bad. You may hear some interesting stories. If you are a senior citizen you can talk to a younger person about what their life is like. In either case, if you know the person well and approach it with a level of sincere interest it shouldn't feel awkward.
Step3
Add an interesting twist to a routine errand. For example, once before St Patrick's Day I tried to buy only green foods or foods with a lot of green on the packaging from the supermarket. Hey, I didn't promise Nobel prize winning activities here, just something to make the day a little more interesting.
Step4
Go out and take pictures. With the advance of digital cameras you don't need to have a professional studio or wait a week to take, and view, descent pictures. The possibilities with this are endless.
Step5
Be extremely curious for the day. Open the hood of your car and see how many parts make sense to you. Look at common appliances or plumbing in your house and, without electrocuting yourself or starting a flood, see how much you understand about how they work. Obviously if you are an electrician or mechanic then pick another subject you don't know much about. I assume if you are browsing this site then you don't know everything about everything. When you find something you don't know much about (those battery operated can openers can be an enigma) then refer back to step one of this article.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you try these things and truly feel that you can't find interest in anything then, all joking aside, you might want to talk to a therapist. Having a hard time finding interest in anything can be an early sign of depression.

on 4/14/2008 Awesome advice and tip. Many people forget to enjoy the everyday. Once when I was bored, I just started to research things I knew nothing about, like the history of cities in Japan. You give good advice that will also bring up your IQ. THANKS!!
