Knitting is one of the most relaxing hobbies today for women. Making the first stitch sturdy and strong can be considered the most important part, so read up!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn of choice
  • Size 8, 14" long knitting needles (for beginners)
  • Yarn needle with big eye
  • Small scissors
  1. Step 1

You are making a slip knot. Lay your yarn in the shape of a "U". Cross the right side OVER the left.

  2. Step 2

Take the same side that you just moved (the one that is on TOP of the other) and place it under the loop you created. Be sure to put it under the loop and not through it.

  3. Step 3

Again, take that same side that you have used in steps 1 and 2. Bring it through the top, right corner of the loop.

  4. Step 4

Put your needle through the bottom-most part of the loop and tighten it. This is your first stitch. Hold this needle in your left hand and use your right hand to control the yarn.

  5. Step 5

From this first stitch, put the tip of your right needle into the slip knot and under the left needle. With left needle still and left fingers bracing the right needle, pick up yarn from the ball with your right index finger.

  6. Step 6

With right index finger, bring yarn under and over the point of the right needle. To continue past the first stitch, follow this link: http://www.learntoknit.com/instructions_kn.php3
