How to Get Rid of That Orange or Red Tint in Your Hair From Iron In the Water

Salons charge a great deal of money to strip the iron from your hair that causes that nasty orange or yellow buildup. And it takes forever for them to do. Here's an easy way to do it yourself... and then prevent it from building up in the first place!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Wash out an empty shampoo bottle.
Step2
Mix 3/4 white vinegar and 1/4 water in your shampoo bottle.
Step3
To get rid of the iron that's already there, saturate your hair with the vinegar/water solution after your regular washing of your hair (but don't use conditioner!).
Step4
Wrap wet head up in towel and let sit for 15 minutes. Longer won't hurt.
Step5
Rewash your hair with shampoo and now you can condition it. The iron should be stripped out but if not completely, repeat the process the next day.
Step6
To prevent iron buildup in the first place, use the same mixture as a rinse after you shampoo and before you condition each time or even every other time you shampoo. Leave it on for the same length of time you'd normally leave your conditioner on while in the shower.

Tips & Warnings

  • This same process will work for your dog!

on 4/3/2008 I can vouch for this working for dogs! It works wonders on my black and tan cavalier. Makes the hair softer, too.
